A Facebook app works like any web app – and can be integrated with any web app. Facebook works well with php/java and mysql backend [front end could be fbml].

Facebook apps are – by very definition – viral. Think of any viral social networking feature like ‘look what your friends are doing with your app’ or ‘invite your friends to use this app’ or ‘you got feedback from your closest friend’ etc. Facebook implements these features on your app by default. Thus when I use your app – even with 10 users – I get a feeling that I’m a part of a larger canvas, a bigger story. Not quite so when you just have a stand-alone web app with low traffic. You are fighting for eyeballs, sending invites, making your app more viral – doing what facebook already does for you.

Why do that ? Leverage facebook’s potential to get your app out of the door. Esp when you want to prove your concept. Facebook statistics are transparent and viral. Your prospective investors can take a look of your app and get a feel of its traction right away. They can see the messages being posted, the feedback given and the users using the app in real.

Further – Facebook apps can be monetized in the same way a web-app is monetized. You are free to show ads inside your app. We, for instance, use http://www.rawclix.com/.

If you’re thinking of launching a social web app, I would stronly argue in favour of Facebook + iPhone platform instead of going for a stand-alone web app. It will cost you the same – but you get more dollars worth of eyeballs.

So RockYou is definitely making tons of cash. So must be slide. Boy o Boy – that $4mn per app valuation does look juicy – but how much money they earn is for anybody’s guess.

Building and deploying iphone applications is really very tedious. Apple seriously do something about it!.

Following are the steps to get iPhone up and running on your iphone JUST FOR TESTING.

1] First, we need to create something called as a Certificate Request (CSR). This is done through the Keychain Access Utility that is located in /Applications/Utility on a mac machine.

2] After the CSR file is created on our machine, we have to submit it to the iPhone Program Portal.

3] You then gotta wait for an approval from Apple.

4] After approval you download the CSE from the Program Portal.

5] After you download the certificate you need to add it back again to the keychain. This is the most simple step in this process, just double click and the certificate will be added to the keychain. But,this is important, don’t miss this one, you should download the certificate to that same machine that generated the CSR for the certificate.

6] This is not the end. Even if you have compiled the code you wont be able to put it on the phone. For that you need the “Provisioning Profile”.

7] Create the Provisioning Profile on the Program Portal and download it to your machine, add it to Xcode – the IDE used for COCOA – iPhone programming and then put it on the phone.

8] After this you’re ready to put the app on iphone and test.

These are the steps to just test your app on your own iPhone. Well too tedious isn’t it?

To distribute your app you have to follow the same steps from creating the CSR and profile but instead of a DEVELOPER CERTIFICATE you have to apply for DISTRIBUTORS CERTIFICATE and then instead of the PROVISIONING PROFILE you have to get the DISTRIBUTION PROFILE.

Apple should think about this process.
